The Power of Stories

LitWorld exists to provide literacy resources outside of the school system to meet the needs of children and families who are impoverished or marginalized throughout the world. By working with local, grassroots organizations in 16 countries across the globe, they offer adaptable programs that build reading, writing, and listening skills, as well as promote children’s sense of personal value, civic responsibility, and hope. LitWorld’s joy-centered approach to learning offers a unique, safe environment for exploring literature, technology, and self-expression. Through their LitClubs and LitCamps, women and children are discovering their own voices and the power to share their own stories.

Like all of us, LitWorld and their partner organizations have not been immune to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, but they have faced these challenges head-on by adjusting their programs with creativity and resourcefulness. In the spring, LitWorld closed their offices and yet had to meet increasing demands from their partner programs. From families in India who urgently needed food during lockdowns to LitKids in Zambia who required phones to be able to continue virtual learning, LitWorld responded swiftly. LitWorld’s on-the-ground partners have worked tirelessly to create alternative ways to interact, provide support, and ensure that literacy is not lost, even in a worldwide pandemic.

Inviting participants from all over the world, LitWorld’s #GlobalHeartMap project gave people of all ages the chance to express what is most important to them and to connect with a global community in the wake of COVID-19 shutdowns. Innovative ideas and flexibility have allowed LitWorld’s vital programs to remain operative and impactful throughout this year and have proven the strength and resilience of LitKids everywhere.

Looking Ahead

We are on the brink of a new year, and LitWorld is looking ahead to 2021 with great hope. Together with their LitKids and families, they have overcome and accomplished so much this past year. Now more than ever, we are confident that the power of sharing stories can restore community and improve lives.

LitWorld will continue to develop more online resources and advance their Virtual LitCamp model for use where in-person gathering is not currently an option and to assist all families and educators who find themselves in flux in the coming year. They will not stop in their efforts to make the power of stories accessible to all. LitWorld envisions a future which encourages equity, grows literacy, and brings joy to kids and families around the globe. 2020 was a year of challenge; 2021 can be a year of change!
